When it comes to the wide world of shots you need around the green, go no further than this year's wedge offerings. You won't need a map to find a place to land your shot, just a high-technology wedge with cutting-edge designs.

Players of all skill levels can enjoy increased spin, soft feel and consistency in their wedge shots with Titleist's Vokey Spin Milled wedges. The line now includes the SM54.10 and SM54.14 models. Deeper grooves and a rougher face enable golfers to maximize spin and control on full and partial wedge shots. Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) machines cut the face and grooves. A special circular saw-style cutting tool is used to create precise grooves with a steeper draft angle and a tighter edge radius for increased friction. The wedges have 30 percent more groove volume than a conventional wedge, which provides more consistent and higher spin, particularly from grassy lies and in wet conditions. Player testing shows spin increases of 10 percent in dry conditions and over 80 percent in wet conditions.

The medium-bounce, narrow-sole SM54.10 sand wedge allows players to open or close the face for a variety of shots from grass or sand. It's a great choice for long bunker shots or firm fairway conditions. The combination of 54 degrees of loft and 14 degrees of bounce makes the SM54.14 wedge ideal for soft sand and turf conditions, as well as for steeper swinging, more aggressive players.

One reason players are unable to master good wedge play is the inability to open the clubface and use the club's bounce to create a shot that lands softly. F2 wedges use Face Forward technology to help players of all skill levels make these shots using a normal golf swing. Face Forward technology places the leading edge of the blade ahead of the hosel, which is particularly effective in rough. The forward-set leading edge of the blade clears the grass out of the path of the hosel. This prevents grass from wrapping around the hosel and turning the angle of the clubface away from the intended line of the shot.

Another benefit of a hosel positioned behind the leading edge of the blade is the club's ability to combat shanked shots caused by a significantly open clubface and contact so near the heel of the club that the ball hits the hosel or by a player who swings outside and creates contact near the hosel. The F2 design ensures that contact between the ball and club happens before the hosel can become a factor.

Eidolon's V-SOLE wedges offer a sophisticated combination of precise CNC groove milling and patented sole technology that increases ball spin and provides higher trajectory and improved control. The wedges incorporate a leading edge on the sole with an aggressive bounce that ensures the leading edge never digs. The primary rear portion of the sole features minimal bounce. Eidolon CNC mills each wedge face and then CNC mills individual grooves to achieve nearly 100 percent of the groove specifications allowed by the USGA, compared to the 60 to 70 percent common in many wedges.

This year, Eidolon introduced left-handed models and an all-new Rifle Graphite Spinner shaft exclusively for the V-SOLE wedges. The shaft mirrors the performance of Rifle steel shafts but is 20 grams lighter. It boasts a higher flex point and slightly softer overall flex for optimum feel and shot-making sensitivity.

Cleveland Golf continues to raise the bar on wedge design with the introduction of the CG11 wedge, the company's latest offering made from CMM metal. The CG11 provides all players with exceptional feel in a wedge that is versatile and dependable. The CG11 has similar spin and ball-flight characteristics to the CG10, but offers extra stability and forgiveness. The CG11 features a slightly larger sole that is wider toward the heel and toe and narrower in the center than the CG10. Weight is also redistributed to the perimeter of the clubhead, creating a unique stability chamber. This helps golfers maintain clubhead steadiness through impact, even on off-center hits. Precision-milled grooves also offer optimum spin control. The CG11 is available with low-, standard- and high-bounce options permitting players of all skill levels to customize their wedges to match their short-game needs.

DeLaCruz Golf's Wolfram wedges have the identical physical design features of the high-performance DLC wedge series. The 52-degree gap wedge includes 4 degrees of bounce and fills the gap between the pitching wedge and sand wedge, while the 60-degree lob wedge features 5 degrees of bounce for firm surface shots. Distinguishing features of the wedges are the unique sole design that allows the club to sit down under the ball even when the face is open, and a sole end that angles away to reduce drag. A generous leading edge prevents digging and fat shots, while a 10-percent tapered U-groove helps keep wedge scorelines clean. Minimal offset in the hosel also allows for easier alignment, creating more consistent shots. The W90tm (tungsten carbide alloy) face insert is ground perfectly flat for consistent response. The precision scorelines provide years of repetitive ball spin and trajectory control performance. W90tm offers excellent abrasion resistance, outwearing forged or cast steel by a factor of 100 to 1.

Feel Golf revamped its PB wedge series for 2006, changing the metal to a softer carbon and stainless-steel mixture that grabs the ball and produces biting spin. The shaft is also inserted deeper into the hosel to keep the Work Axis -- where the ball meets the sweet spot at the leading edge -- at the bottom scoring lines and prevent the ball from climbing up the clubface. Ball climb inadvertently increases loft, affecting distance control and reducing ball spin. A slight sole redesign offers an increased camber to decrease mishits. The grooves are Feel's proprietary U/V design.

Wilson Staff Fw6 wedges are forged from 8620 carbon steel and combine a traditional head shape with time-honored, fluid-feel, bore-through technology and Control Grooves. The bore-through design increases the shaft insertion through the clubhead, allowing for weight to be removed from the hosel and repositioned behind the face for optimal trajectories. The extended shaft also increases torsional stability at impact. A TPU plastic plug on the sole absorbs vibration for a softer feel. Control Grooves, which conform to USGA limits, are deeper and steeper than industry standards and promote higher spin and more control around the green. While standard grooves have a 42.5-degree angle with rounded edges, Control Grooves have a 32.5-degree angle and square edges. The squared edges, which may scuff soft-cover balls, result in more spin, more bite and better control.

Designed to complement LaJolla Golf's innovative Knife iron set, the Knife wedges offer exceptional playability and accuracy around the greens. The wedges feature shallow, patented, three-blade technology while maintaining a classic profile and thin topline. Shallow blades combined with hollow-core weighting provide enhanced perimeter weighting for forgiveness and allow golfers to better control ball flight. A tungsten back weight produces a low and back center of gravity for higher trajectory and straighter shots, making the clubs easier to hit from any lie. A vibration absorption ring on the back of the club also imparts a solid feel at impact.

Adams' Puglielli Wedge, named for industry veteran and club designer Max Puglielli, has a distinctive soft feel and is available in two models -- the Sweep or Steep. The traditional teardrop shape is pleasing to the eye and packed with performance features that easily translate to golfers of all abilities. The Fly-Cut face produces consistent shots with high spin, while the CNC-milled grooves enhance control and accuracy. The high-polish finish offers a premium look with a soft feel.

Yonex added two models of the Cyberstar 01 Forged Wedge to its existing Cyberstar 03 Forged Wedge product line. The Cyberstar 01 Forged Wedge is manufactured of forged carbon steel that provides the unique solid feel preferred by tour-caliber and advanced golfers. The wedges also feature a raw-finish clubface that augments the soft feel, accuracy, trajectory control and shot-making capabilities. The wedge comes equipped with a True Temper Dynamic Gold S300 Steel shaft.
