Not all golf bags are created equal. In the past
few years, engineers have unveiled bag designs
and components that make golf more enjoyable,
comfortable and less frustrating. New technology
has relegated many designs of just several years
ago to the game's historical archives.
From weatherproof protective covers that allow
single-handed club access to carry-strap systems
that greatly decrease stress on the back, to molded
tops that protect clubheads and make club access
easy, innovations continue to pour from the minds
of creative designers and engineers.
Hybrid bags are a hot topic this year. These
golf bags meet the growing demand for a versatile
bag that satisfies golfers who walk and ride but
who don't want to sacrifice ample storage capacity
and amenities when they choose to walk. Hybrids
sit nicely on push or pull carts, are lighter
than traditional cart bags, yet easily transition
from walking carts to riding carts.
Ogio's hybrid, the Edge, incorporates a group
of components that rivals any cart bag while weighing
in at carry-bag levels, just 6.95 pounds. Key
features on the Edge include Ogio's patented 9-inch
Woode top that protects clubs and arranges them
for easy access, the Hoode protective rain cover
and a zipperless ball pocket that offers quick
and easy access to golf balls. There's also a
TORQ strap that secures a stand bag to the riding
cart bar to prevent shifting or bag rotation on
any terrain, and an external ball silo ball dispenser
for immediate access to a golf ball when needed.
Burton's Cruzer bag was also designed to bridge
the gap between the cart- and carry-bag segments.
The Cruzer fits comfortably on the back of riding
carts and settles firmly on push carts and Speed
Carts. The contoured bottom fits securely to cart
brackets and eliminates sliding and twisting.
The custom top allows easy club access when strapped
to riding carts and reduces club clanking during
use on hand carts. Special sling attachments and
adjustments also ensure a flush fit, while easy-grip
side handles make maneuvering or transporting
the bag a snap.
Datrek also entered the hybrid market with the
Lite Speed bag, which features 14 individual dividers,
an external putter compartment, innovative ball-drop
system, high-tech handles and a strap/pass-through
molded design for on-cart stability.
Stand bag originator Sun Mountain unveiled yet
another terrific innovation in its Lightning and
Lightning ES (extra space) RollerTop stand bags.
The patent-pending RollerTop is a handle that
extends from the top of the golf bag, providing
a convenient hold for the golfer when removing
the bag from the shoulder. The RollerTop handle
rotates freely to integrate the motions of removing
the golf bag, placing the bag on the ground and
activating the stand mechanism into one fluid
motion. Additionally, the RollerTop offers a new
strap connection point that keeps the carry strap
from rubbing against the golfer's side and moves
the bag's center of gravity, resulting in a better
balanced bag for carrying ease. The bags weigh
3.9 and 4.9 pounds, respectively.
Mizuno's AeroLite Series is another carry bag
offering that is ultra comfortable and lightweight
at just 3.5 pounds. The AeroLite features a patent-pending
seven-way Kabuki Top Cuff with Divide and Slide
technology. The Kabuki has uniquely shaped top
compartments that use the natural weight of the
clubheads to separate the clubs and minimize clatter
damage. A multitude of large storage pockets,
zippered valuables pocket, Mizuno shower cap for
waterproof protection, FlexClip umbrella holder
and BeaverTail pedal for easy opening of the stand
legs round out the design.
Bridgestone also focused on players who prefer
to carry their golf bag with the introduction
of the Ultra Light Stand Bag. Weighing less than
4 pounds, the lightweight, stay-construction design
features a sturdy stand mechanism that positions
the bag low and secure when engaged. A thick,
padded, double-strap system adds carry comfort,
while the padded six-way top and three-way full-length
dividers balance club distribution and allow easy
access to clubs. Six pockets offer ample storage.
The water bottle pocket is also accessible while
walking. Upper and lower assist handles make vehicle
access easy.
In the stand-bag segment, perhaps the coolest
offering comes from up-and-coming club manufacturer
Nickent. Its 14-Way Cooler cart bag allows you
to easily find your club of choice via the bag's
14-way divider system or your drink of choice
via the built-in mini cooler that holds up to
four beverage cans. The bag also features a dry
pocket, large sidewall pockets and an accessories
pocket for your cell phone and other valuables.
Club Glove's FCO Luxury cart bag is a beautiful,
traditional-style bag designed and fitted for
a riding cart. Club Glove used the traditional
look of a staff bag and simply reversed the way
it loads onto the cart. The design allows unobstructed
access to nine of the 11 pockets. Two steel belt
loops keep the bag in the upright position at
all times. Heavy-duty zippers and hardware provide
enhanced durability not found on many designs.
Easy access to clubs was the main focus of Great
Divider. The company's new Mesa and Horizon bags
feature the Elevated Base System (EBS). EBS steps
up clubs from the front of the bag to the back.
By elevating each row, the bag separates the clubheads
to reduce contact between the heads from one row
to the next. EBS also keeps clubs from getting
cluttered, so finding the needed club is quick
and easy. The Mesa offers classic lines, while
the Horizon boasts more modern styling.
Belding carved a niche in the customization segment
with its Passport bag. With Belding's new fabric
offerings, as well as croco-embossed leathers
and vintage and glazed vinyls, thousands of choices
are available. The Passport offers a contour design,
multiple cart-friendly pockets, ample garment
storage, mesh glove pocket and tee holders. Both
the 81/2- and 91/2-inch bags have six-way tops
with three full-length dividers for easy club
organization.
Answering the demand for more high-tech equipment
made specifically for youngsters, U.S. Kids unveiled
its Champion Series bag. Designed for comfort
and convenience, the bag features a dual strap
with thick shoulder pads and a unique crisscross
harness to distribute weight evenly and promote
healthy posture. The bag also incorporates five
spacious storage pockets and a four-way top divider.
A rain hood is also included. Two sizes are available.
The 30-inch bag fits the U.S. Kids Green and Silver
systems, while the 32-inch bag fits the Gold and
Tour Series systems. Each size is available in
four colors.
